As State Treasurer, Sarah Steelman led the fight to throw a contractor using illegal immigrant labor off of a state supported project, and did not rest until those jobs were filled by Missourians. As Governor, Sarah will continue her fight to protect Missouri’s citizens and jobs with a commonsense plan to crack down on illegal immigration:
- Prohibit acceptance of the matricula consular card in Missouri, an unreliable identification card used by illegal immigrants for such activities as obtaining a driver’s licenses and setting up a bank account.
- Identify and deport foreign-born criminals and sex offenders currently in Missouri by working with federal authorities to check their immigration status.
- Enact meaningful penalties against employers using illegal immigrant labor.
- Deny state benefits to illegal immigrants.
- Require public employers to verify that they are hiring legal workers.
- Refer suspicious tax returns filed by illegal immigrants to federal authorities; there are at least 5,000 such cases in Missouri.
- Prohibit sanctuary cities in Missouri.
