Ethics

As a conservative State Senator and State Treasurer, Sarah has always stood up to powerful politicians and special interests on behalf of Missouri’s citizens. As a freshman Senator, Sarah Steelman introduced a bill to eliminate pensions for state legislators. Sarah Steelman was also the author of the 2004 Sunshine Law. As State Treasurer, Sarah Steelman successfully implemented the nation’s first Terror-Free Investment policy, preventing investment of Missouri dollars in companies that aid terrorism, even though Wall Street opposed her. When bureaucrats tried to illegally settle a lawsuit with state funds, Sarah Steelman stopped payment on the check. And when politicians tried to use state tax dollars to subsidize their personal investments, Sarah Steelman denied them.

With her proven record of standing up to powerful politicians and special interests, Sarah Steelman is in the best position of all candidates for Governor to protect the interests of Missouri’s taxpayers. As Governor, Sarah Steelman will:

  • Institute a policy banning elected officials and their families from profiting off of state tax credits, government contracts and loans. Steelman implemented a proposal banning state officials and their families from profiting off of alternative energy tax credits that was overturned by the Missouri Senate in the middle of the night.
  • Prohibit elected officials from accepting gifts from lobbyists.
  • Implement a two-year revolving door ban to prevent elected officials from securing jobs as lobbyists while in office.
  • Ban elected officials from serving as political consultants.
  • Give the Ethics Commission teeth by the purposeful violation of ethics law a felony.
  • Broadcast all legislative committee proceedings on the Internet.
