US Senate candidate Sarah Steelman comments on recent attacks by primary opponent John Brunner
June 26, 2012
Rolla, MO - Mr. Brunner has nothing else to offer Missourians but negative campaigning. He has no positive record to run on, and desperately does not want to talk about his own history on taxes and debt, including a record of junk debt, heavy reliance on tax credits and his inability to answer questions--being labeled by one reporter as "not ready, not even close." Mr. Brunner and his campaign staff may think Missourians are shallow, but this is the Show-Me State and we are just starting to be shown the real John Brunner.
In fact, Mr. Brunner has spent years going to great lengths to avoid paying taxes on his millions, including setting up off-shore businesses in the Cayman Islands, repeatedly being late on paying property taxes on luxury cars and seeking out government bailouts in the form of taxpayer grants and tax credits--all the while running up so much debt in his business that it was reduced to junk bond status. There are enough politicians in Washington who think they are above having to follow the rules, Missourians do not need one more.
Once voters are reminded of all the things they already know and like about Sarah Steelman, including her experience as a mother and a small business owner, her background as an economist, her career fighting for smaller government and lower taxes, her leadership role in maintaining Missouri's cherished AAA bond rating, and her history as a conservative willing to stand up to her own party leadership, Mr. Brunner's negative politics as usual will be rejected by Missourians.
