Sarah Steelman was born and raised in Jefferson City, Missouri. She graduated from Jefferson City High School, and then earned the degrees of B.A. in History and Masters in Economics from the University of Missouri.

She then worked as an Economist for the Missouri Department of Revenue, Deputy Director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, adjunct professor of Economics at Lincoln University, Executive Director of Big Brothers and Big Sisters in Rolla, and an investment broker for AG Edwards.

Sarah was elected to the Missouri State Senate from the 16th District in 1998 where she served until 2004. As a State Senator she had a 100% pro-life voting record, sponsored the bills requiring students say the pledge of allegiance and observe Veteran’s Day in our public schools, voted against every proposed tax increase, and was the sponsor of the Marriage Amendment to the constitution. As Chairman of the Commerce Committee she worked hard to increase economic development and reduce the regulatory burden on Missouri businesses. She won many awards including the Eagle Forum Award, Associated Industries Voice of Missouri Award, and the Missouri Sheriff’s Association Senator of the Year.

In 2004 she was elected State Treasurer and has brought historic changes to that office. By
implementing new Missouri First Investment policies, Steelman has returned over $1 billion to
our state and put it to work for families and communities. She has received international acclaim
for leading a nation-wide movement to cut off money going to fund terrorism through taxpayer
investments. She implemented a new college savings plan for Missouri families that is now
recognized as one of the best in the country. And through hard work and smart money
management techniques and policies she has brought over $640 million in additional revenue
to our state.

Sarah lives in Rolla with her husband David, with their 3 sons, Sam, Joe and Michael. Her
stepdaughter Amanda Moore lives in Louisiana with her husband Taylor and their newborn
baby Lily.
